How Important Is Good Graphic Design?

What Makes A Design Good?

There are a lot of designers, graphic artists and programmers out there who think a good design is something totally original, creative, or artsy. That's simply not true.

The best design for your site, if you are trying to sell something, is a straight-forward, easy to read page...

As much as I hate to admit it, there are some really great things I could do for your site that would accomplish nothing but losing you sales.

Like all those cool fonts? The are hard to read. And if it's hard to read, then your site won't pass that 7-second test.

What about lots of photos and illustrations? One or two good photos is really all you need. Maybe a graph to help illustrate the benefits of your product...

What you don't need is a page cluttered with animations, too many colors (even if they don't clash more than 4 is too many...), or other special effects.

Just ask yourself, when is the last time you bought something because of an animated graphic? Unless you were in the market for clip art...

Or what about those sites with 5 columns, small fonts, and lots of boxes? Even if you think they look "professional"... have you bought anything from them lately?
